Engineering Company contributes to the design and installation of United Nations Memorial honouring victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Concord, ON—April 2, 2015—PICCO Engineering had the distinct honour of being chosen as the Engineering Consultant on a UN Memorial that was unveiled at the UN Headquarters in New York City on March 25th. The permanent Memorial, called “Ark of Return” honours the victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

March 25th was the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Memorial, located on the United Nations Visitors Plaza in New York, invites people everywhere to contemplate the legacy of the slave trade and to fight against racism and prejudice today.

As H.E. Mr. Arnold J. Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica stated, the Ark of Return will “…serve as a reminder for generations to come of mankind’s past failures”.

PICCO Engineering’s input was extensive; the fast track nature of the project required intense engineering and drafting to meet the production and installation demands. Services included being integral to the coordination and design of the steel frame detailing as related to the engineering of the stone, stone anchoring, engineered anchor details and overall coordination of the stone installation.

PICCO Engineering President and CEO, Michael Picco, was amongst VIP dignitaries at the unveiling and refers to this project with pride:

“The Ark of Return has been a special project for PICCO. Knowing that which it symbolizes, and realizing it will stand at the UN for generations to come, is a source of pride for our employees”. As Picco states, the project was “certainly a challenging yet very rewarding engineering experience that speaks to our distinct stone expertise”.
