The Barnes Foundation building in Philadelphia is a striking architectural landmark that houses an exceptional collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern paintings, along with decorative arts and artifacts. Designed by the renowned architect Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the building is characterized by its unique façade and innovative design, which reflect the foundation's commitment to education and the arts. The structure features open, unsealed joints, allowing for a dynamic interaction between the interior and exterior spaces.

This project presented a remarkable challenge that required innovative stone engineering solutions. Each piece of Jerusalem Limestone used in the façade was distinct, necessitating a custom anchoring design to accommodate the open joints while ensuring structural integrity. The complex integral glazing systems further complicated the construction process, requiring careful planning and collaboration among the design team. PICCO developed fully detailed fabrication drawings and implemented robust steel struts and heavy gauge connections to support the expansive cavity space within the façade. The result is a distinctive building that has garnered acclaim and numerous awards, thanks in part to the inspiring design of its Limestone façade. The Barnes Foundation now stands as a testament to the seamless integration of art, architecture, and engineering.
