A tribute to the 34th President of the United States, the Eisenhower Memorial was commissioned by Congress in 1999 to honor the legacy of the World War II Supreme Allied Commander. Located in a public park adjacent to the National Mall and directly across from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the memorial is a significant addition to the nation's monuments.
The design of this urban park is dominated by stunning Royal Ambar Limestone, which is utilized in several unique applications throughout the 4-acre space. Large 77-foot columns clad in a one-third bond pattern, along with curved stone elements, immediately draw the eye. Notably, the segmented back surfaces required adjustable connection clips to accommodate the curved concrete structure. The memorial features impressive bronze sculptures of Eisenhower, and over 16,000 paving stones were meticulously laid, aligning precisely with the planters, knee walls, and sculptural memorial block elements.
PICCO provided full-service stone engineering, detailing coordination, and installation support for this project. It demanded flexibility and creativity to address challenges related to the selected stone while maintaining the design intent. The result of countless hours of coordination, engineering design, installation, and fabrication is a world-class cultural project that rightfully stands among the Washington monuments on the National Mall. This memorial will serve as an important historical and aesthetic tribute to Eisenhower and the pivotal role he played in shaping the world.
