FLOATING STAIR
Toronto, ON
Architect:

Completion:
2019
Material:
Charcoal Basalt
This renovation project by Clemmensen Builders and Peter Clewes of Architects Alliance beautifully merges a contemporary vision with a historic multilevel dwelling set in a ravine in the heart of Toronto. Charcoal basalt stone flooring, a white interior palette, and soft-toned wood floors dominate all levels, while punched windows have been reconstructed with floor-to-ceiling glazing, inviting stunning views of the ravine and city on the main level.
Amidst this elegant design, the solid basalt stone feature stair stands out as a remarkable element. Originally designed to cantilever treads off the supporting masonry wall, PICCO Engineering was brought on board to leverage our stone and structural engineering expertise to develop a bolder approach. We proposed a true span, post-tensioned, solid stone "floating" solution, which was enthusiastically accepted.
In collaboration with Webb Yates (London, England), we provided full execution, including material supply, engineering, installation, and quality control. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind stair that enhances the storied home and complements its peaceful setting.
