The new Multnomah County Central Courthouse is a striking 17-story tower clad in stone and glass that replaces the outdated old courthouse, addressing the needs of Portland's growing population. This modern, sustainable structure signifies an exciting renaissance for the city, combining innovative design with functionality.
The building's façade prominently features 4 cm thick Amalfi Limestone, extending from the ground to the 17th floor. Stone panels measure 5 feet high by 3 feet wide, while the columns consist of 2 feet high by 5 feet wide spandrel panels. The architect's vision is evident in the random vertical strips of glass curtain wall and stone panel sections, with staggered glass areas and variable widths of stone creating a dynamic visual progression. However, achieving this design posed significant constructability challenges, particularly with seismic criteria dictating over 3 inches of inter-story drift. A robust stone support system was essential for creating a water-tight rainscreen wall that would perform effectively during and after a seismic event, leading to the selection of the ECLAD ESV aluminum wall system.
The project's delivery included full BIM services to a Level of Detail (LOD) of 450, ensuring precise confirmation of component fit and system integration. Comprehensive load studies, assembly movements, and installation tolerances were meticulously evaluated, with custom aluminum extrusions designed specifically for this project. The accurate 3D model facilitated coordination among various trades, minimizing site adjustments. As a LEED Gold-certified building, the courthouse incorporates sustainable features such as a green roof, rainwater harvesting, and solar panels. With its enduring beauty and modern design, the Multnomah County Central Courthouse stands as a beacon of justice and a lasting symbol of Portland's commitment to sustainability, inspiring all who visit.
