Studio Bell, home to Canada's National Music Centre, is an architectural landmark in Calgary, Alberta. The building's exterior is defined by nine interlocking towers with subtly curved forms, inspired by the shapes of musical instruments. The façade is clad in glazed terracotta tiles that shimmer under varying light conditions, enhancing its dynamic presence within the urban landscape. The flowing design of the structure reflects both the rhythm of music and the natural contours of the surrounding environment, creating a striking and innovative architectural statement.

PICCO Engineering was engaged during the construction drawing phase to provide comprehensive services, including light gauge steel (LGS) design engineering and drawings, finite element analysis for the terracotta attachment system, and façade engineering along with shop drawings. Given the building's complex geometry—transitioning from a square base to a sculpted curved top—PICCO was tasked with developing a structurally sound yet efficient solution to maintain the architectural intent. Our team devised a simple yet highly effective approach to ensure precision in execution while preserving the aesthetic integrity of the design.

To accommodate the unique form, traditional straight metal studs were not viable. PICCO engineered a method to twist the studs, aligning them seamlessly with the building's curvature. Each floor required meticulous planning to determine the exact stud locations and create a controlled moment arm for twisting. These details were carefully documented for surveyors and installers to maintain accuracy during construction. To establish durable connections, PICCO designed an innovative circular screw pattern capable of accommodating any angle, simplifying installation while maintaining strength. The substructure supported a specialized Royal Tichelaar terracotta system, with tiles engineered through finite element analysis to ensure proper loading, spacing, and attachment. Through our expertise, we contributed to a structurally sound and visually compelling landmark that embodies both technical excellence and artistic vision.
