Case Study: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts—Claire et Marc Borgie Pavillion

On September 29, 2020, Mike Picco presented this stone cladding case study at Zak World of Facades—an international conference series on facade design and engineering, attracting over 25,000+ delegates across its 75 completed editions.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Unique Quarry Procurement—visits with the architect to Vermont Danby, the largest underground marble quarry in the world, to select size, cut and thickness needed. Full fabrication shop built inside the mountain.

  2. Stone Testing— flexural strength tests conducted to measure resistance to wind/seismic loads; pull/shear anchor strength tests; as well as how far to span anchors in between.

  3. Anchor Design—our approach considered how far off the structure is the stone? Is there insulation? How big is the cavity? How big are the pieces? And what is the structural back-up that we’re anchoring to?
